The Heart of Our Healing Practice
Patrick A. Nelson, MA, LLPC, MAML, CPS
Founder & Therapist
Patrick A. Nelson is a Mental Health Therapist and Owner of Brand Nubians Mental Health Counseling Services. He holds a Master of Arts in Counseling and a Master of Arts in Ministry Leadership from Cornerstone University and Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Philosophy of Psychology with a specialization in trauma.
Patrick specializes in working with underserved and marginalized communities, including young men of color, trauma survivors, and returning citizens. His work addresses complex challenges such as trauma, violence, systemic inequities, and reintegration, with a focus on healing, resilience, and long-term wellbeing.
His clinical approach is grounded in the Dynamic Maturational Model (DMM), an attachment-based, trauma-informed framework that views behavior as adaptive rather than pathological. Through this lens, Patrick helps clients reduce shame, make meaning of their experiences, and develop more effective relational and coping strategies.
He integrates evidence-based and culturally responsive practices, including trauma-informed care, mentoring programs (Bloom and Rooted), and court-referred Anger Management services through the 61st District Court and Kent County.
Drawing from both professional training and lived experience, Patrick brings authenticity, insight, and compassion to his work. His approach centers on safety, relational repair, and empowering individuals to reclaim purpose, agency, and lasting growth.
